225..anything on a 7.5-8 inch rim will be too much. If your going to a wider rim then you can go up in tire width

my rubbers have to cover 8" of width. but I like a tight fit so I wouldn't be rubbin too much on the undercarraige. 215 for me. :D

Yes, I am an immature, smartass POS. Honestly tho, I would run 225s for the same reason listed above. Since it's a Jetta.I'd be running 225 on 18s tho.

I run 225/45/17s right now. My old set was 205/55/16, and a 225/50/16 would work fine, and was the same diameter.

I have 225/50/r16 on my car. The Rims are 6.5 inches wide, so 225 is about as wide as i can go. You have to push them real hard to have them roll on you and with the 50 mm height the ride is not much more harsh than stock. Put something on that is a bit wider than you rim to reduce the possibility of scuffing a rim. I know I'd have scuffed all 4 of mine if I hadn't done that.

definately stick to 225 width on the mk4. on a mk3 or older, 225 and bigger will rub

i thought i had figured out what each number meant but i guess i was wrong... either way i have 235s on my montes... I thought 225s were less tire... is it the second # the 35 or 45 that designates how much of a sidewall you have?

225/50/r16
1st number is width in mm, 2nd # is sidewall height in mm, 3rd # is rim size in inches unless its a metric rim and tire combo

first number(225 or 235) is the is the width measured in millmeters, second number(45) is your sidewall. this is a percentage of your width. so basically if you had 235/45/17, you'd multiply 235 by 0.45 and get 105.75 which is your sidewall height in millimeters. if you already have 235 and are going with 17s then stick with that, but as PJ said 225 is gonna be the safest bet for 18s

1st number is the tread width. The second number is the aspect ratio. The third number is the rim diameter.
Aspect ratio defines the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tread width.
225/40/18
225mm wide
sidewall height = 225mm x .40 = 90mm
Overall diameter
rim = 18 inches
1" = 25.4mm
rim diameter in mm = 457.2mm
Total tire height = 2 x sidewall height + rim diameter
637.2mm = 2 x 90mm + 457.2mm
I hate it when I write a response and don't see that there's a whole other page of them that have already done the job. It was a shame to delete.
Another important thing: you must try to get the overall height as close as possible to the original or you run into problems with your speedometer being off, odometer incorrect, etc. You can play with the aspect ratio to get the sidewall the same height as the original while going wider on the tread.
