I've spent about eight hours per wheel on each of my wheels and still have at least another eight to ten hours per wheel to even think about achieving the finish I want. At this point, with the main legwork out of the way, I'd be interested in having a metal finishing shop complete the project. By the time I buy all the sandpaper and other supplies I'll need, it'll be far more cost-effective to have them done by the professionals. Besides, no matter how hard I try, I simply will not be able to get as uniform a finish as they will be able to.
Do any of you know of any good shops in the area? My only issue is that I'll need to find a loaner set of wheels for a few days. Jimmy is checking on that for me, so I may be able to bring the wheels over one day and not have to worry about unmounting and mounting when I get there. It'd be a good excuse to get the Touareg out on the road as well. ;)
FWIW, all I'm having done is the face on each of four Santa Monica wheels. No barrels, no insides of the spokes. The clear has all been stripped off, and they already have a fairly decent shine to them thanks to some metal polishes I bought.
