The time is getting close to me needing new tires. I figure since I'm goign to replace the tire, why not go a little larger :)

MOst important is the tire, im thinking a BFGoodrich KDW II. How does that sound? 125 a piece for 17's and 141 a piece for 18's....could be worse.

And time for wheels... what do u think of these in an indigo blue GTI mk4....SSR GT-7H (http://www.tirerack.com/servlet/CallJsp?target=wheelSearchCloseUp&wheelIndex=52&sizeIndex=0&showRear=no&setIndex=11&filterSize=18&filterFinish=&filterSpecial=Pricing)

says "Session expired" - just put it in IMG tags

Im so uneducated in the tire kingdom so I can't give an opinion on the KDW IIs but I too would like to know - - My Potenza's still have a hefty amount of tread, but never a bad idea to look into it

Potenza or Kuhmo MX i have had both. Right now i have the Kuhmo MX's and i have to say they are nice. Sticky Sticky and you can get 40K plus out of them. My potenzas were dead after 31k...

Since you always complain about rough ride, stick with 17s... there are some nice looking 17s if you dont wanna stay with LBs.. just my opinion

The Goodyear F1's I have now are some VERY sticky tires..They hold the road like no other..Excellent tire in the rain also...I haven't a clue about wheels..Sorry

I say either new tires and chip or new tires and save up for cams and chip. SSR's are nice but the growl of a cammed VR is even nicer

keep the long beaches and spend that money elsewhere. The LBs don't look bad at all imo.

i like the LB's as well. That is why i havent got anything else, i would rather spend the money somewhere else. 17's are perfect for the mk4...

what charlie said.

It would have taken a smokin' deal on bbs rc (the 337 wheels?) for me to get rid of my Long Beaches I had on my 01 Jetta. I likes them. Homer approves... and he has the gun. do what he says and nobody gets hurt.

I would go with the Kuhmo MX, you really can't beat the quality for the price. Those will be my next tires.

alright. Thanks people! :)

The LB's do look nice, i will agree to that. Perhaps i should get the road rash fixed, cuz that really bugs me....

Ill look into Kumho MX's and 40k miles! ill take that. Once i go to the track it wont be 40k miles. i gaurntee u that. MY stockers at 18k are on thier way out. But then again, i have less tread in the back that the front, which really seems odd.... Unless VW or wheel work rotated them....

And PJ, i never complain about the ride, it's my dad who hates it. I worry about rubbing, that's it :)

No No, 40k was with one year of autocrossing. That was Simbone, he has a 337 and ran them for a year got 40k out of them....

wow!

I just dont get it. I was always under the impression that in order to get grip, u need to deposit some of the tire onto the ground. So how u can u have 40kmiles, on a tire that grips better than a potenza?!

Im really liking this. I think i found my next tire :)

now this is just wrong.... tire rack. (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare2.jsp?shipquote=N&compare=true&partNumber=&make=&model=&clarifier=&price=&width=225%2F&ratio=45&diameter=17&sortCode=&speedRating=&qty=&stockMessage=&type=T&URL=&newCompare=true&prevprice=&loadRating=&promoShortText=&promoUrl=&promoLongText=&sidewall=&sidewallShown=&frontTire=&frontLeftTire=&rearTire=&rearLeftTire=&wantRHP=&RHPprice=&sumRating=&hasSpec=&hasWarranty=&hasComments=&hasTests=&hasSurveys=&perf=&pre=&specCode=&autoMake=Volkswagen&autoModel=GTI+VR6&autoYear=2003&autoModClar=&RunFlat=All&goWhere=%252Ftires%252FCompare1.jsp&minLoad=S&vehicleSearch=true&speed_rating=HR&speed_rating=VR&speed_rating=WR&speed_rating=YR&speed_rating=ZR&manufacturer=BFGoodrich&manufacturer=Kumho&performance=MP&performance=UHP&performance=UHPAS&startIndex=0&sortValue=1&qty_245YR7GFTAKDL_=2&qty_245YR7GFTAKDR_=2&compareList=2&qty_245YR7EMX_=4&qty_245ZR7GFSP_=4&compareList=4&qty_245YR7GFTAKDW2_=4&qty_245YR7KU31XL_=4&qty_245WR7ES712_=4&qty_245WR7EASX_=4)

Ok, now lets look at this. THe KDW II is cheaper with a higher grip rating, and a higher tread wear rating.

So why is this too good to be true... SUmthing not right.

Someone care to elaborate?

I can't see a tire with a 220 tread wear lasting 40k miles?! it's just crazy. Please help me out...

Michelin Pilot Sport is the only tire in my opinion...

VeedUp
05-22-2005, 07:16 PM
I had the Michelin Pilot Sports and IMO, they're not as good in dry and wet traction as the Kuhmos are. Kuhmo MXs are the best bang for the buck.

MrBlueVr6

pilot sports are good, but my brothers audi went through them in 18kmiles, and they are NOT cheap.

I have decided it's one of hte other, the MX of KDW II. Ive even concidered Proxes, Azenis, hell, u name it, and these remain my top 2.

My pockets aren't huge ok...

Keep the LB's Good looking rim, and spend the money else where (or save it...right...)

If your looking for longevity in a 'sporty' tire Look into the yokohama avids. I have the V4's and they are great for around town. Alomst a year old and still have 3/4 tread- thats with 7 or 8 autox's. They are NOT a good track tire.......not enough grip- but plenty for around town.

If you race alot, get a decitated set of rims cheap and good sport rubber. Your reg tires and sports will last longer and probally save you some cash in the long run.

Good luck with you decision!

i dont race that often.

U wanna talk a crappy track tire? i went on stock rubber, yes, u heard correctly, i went on STOCK rubber. It was still so much fun i cant even begin to tell u.

Ill check out the avid's and see what i think...

just looked at your car in the garage. Def need rubber, but keep the LBs. Need some eyelids too imo. Car looks nice regardless though.
