This link seems to favor the black rims, I really like them but there are so much to choose from. I have a '02 silver jetta 1.8t - looking to put 17" or 18" on it.

I think if I had a silver car I would have gone with Anthracite just for a little variety

i like like or gunmetal rims on silver cars. But it depends on your theme. If your going with the black on silver, go black. If you trying to keep it subtle, and under the radar, go with something silver.
17 or 18 is a big decision IMO. 18's aer slightly more harsh, and tires for 18's are more expensive. 17's still look good, but not quiet as nice as 18's. However, 18's apprently make your car a little slower. I could feel a slight difference whe ni put on my 18 inch CH, and those arent heavy wheels either. It has something to do with the overal circumfrance of the wheel on an 18 vs anything smaller.
Also, an 18 with dish, with LOOK the same size as a 17 with no dish. However, an 18 with no dish looks large. I like both options. But with that said, dont get 17s with dish, they will look small, and it wont complaiment the car aswell.
dont go wider than 8, 8.5 is a REALLY tight fit. You can get it to work, as I have, but You have been warned. I had to roll my fender, but i wouldnt change it if i were to do it again. The stretched tire is SWEET.
keep in mind, looks are subjective to various opinions. This is my opinion :)

i vote 18s... my motto... more rim less rubber... my rims are 18x8 in the front and 18x9 rear and i dont have any rubbing issues.

Thanks for all the quick responses. What is this performance issue all about? What do you lose, acceleration or handling? I can imagine the ride will get much harder but what else does it do to the car. I love the way 18's make the Jetta look, but everything is mre expensive. I tried to find the VW 5 star 17" rims, but people want $250 a piece for them. Who will give them that kind of money when they can get something totally custom for less?
I like the black and/or the gun metal but what is the consensus on colored rims. I never had a choice before and I don't know what I like better.
To dish or not to dish, is the question, I do want the rim to have a little lip on it.
What's Anthracite?

Fancy word for gray or gunmetal.
Weight is the key issue. I went with 17s so they were lighter for track competitions. If you don't race, go with what looks better. Rotational mass (wheels and tires) has more of an impact on performance than just the weight of the wheels and tires themselves. Because they are spinning that force is multiplied. If you want to go faster, go with 17s, if you want to 'pimp the ladies' go with 18s.
I vote go with an aftermarket rim. Then nicest OEM rim is still an OEM rim.
psionix

anthracite = gunmetal.
18s will give you better handling in everyday driving, not so great in high demand situations like autox-the weight is a killer. also with the weight you'll have more rotational mass, more weight = more intertia, so less acceleration.
EDIT - Ted beat me to it.

anthracite is the gunmetal color. everyone has their personal preference on rims. some people like to keep OEM rims on their cars so like customs. same goes for dish. but like Mr Lima said, if you go 17s dont do dish. I had the montes on my car before the rims i have now. everyone thinks that the rims i have now are smaller when they are actually larger. with the 18s you feel the road more. as far as performance i think rim weight is the biggest issue.
damn im slow...

I promise to get some together this weekend but it looks real homie with those hub caps on there - lol! I am embarrased to post pics, but I will do it - and you guys can pretend it looks nice - lol!

u say u want the 5 spoke 17" rims from VW? I have some!!!

if u want these, lemme know, i can find a good price :)
the performance is a SLIGHT decrease in acceleration, some dont notice it.
If you have a heavy wheel, u also increase un-sprung mass. yada yada. im simple terms, dont get something super heavy.
and PJ, 19's are super heavy ;)

That car has a nice caliper and rotor on it - what does the stock equipment look like. Will I be forced to upgrade?
MrBlueVr6
06-23-2005, 08:09 PM
nah. The stock brakes look fine. If you want to add some "bling factor" to the car, concider some caliper paint and some slotted rotors. It'll REALLY clean up the look.
Aftermarket brakes will put u in the hole at a minimum of a grand. Caliper paint is 30 bucks, and new rotors are like 270, pads are 120 ish.
Again, its ur call ;)

as I have said many times.
DONT BUY CHEAP WHEELS. just because the price is low, does not mean it's the wheel of your dreams. Get something with a reputable name, and see what other peoples experiences have been. experiences OUTSIDE of the website. THe reason i say this is this.
My friends dad purchased some wheels for his C5 vette. They were nice looking wheels, and were preety affordable. However, he went though tires obserdly fast, and couldnt figure out why. When he went to get his new tires installed, the shop called him telling him 3 out of 4 of the wheels, could NOT be balenced.
The wheels had warped from daily driving over bumps and potholes. So he was without a car for a week, and ended up having to buy new wheels, but this time, reputable ones.
SOO he wasted money on bad wheels, and as a result, went through tires too quickly.
Just a heads up, you have my warning ;)
(BTW, Flick is an exception, because they acutally are TUV certified. Those of you who have heard of it, know it's the most extensive certification in the car industry, and it's given by germans for, IIRC, approval for use on the autobahn.

Why not go with some OEM wheels and add a little extra touch to them? No photoshopping necessary- I've got a Reflex Silver Jetta as well. ;)
