I'm taking these off of my 2001 Wolfsburg and putting them on my '93 Corrado which currently has the '15 Speedlines (no they are not for sale). I want to use a lower profile tire than they currently have (205/45/16). What are my options for a lower profile? 205/40/16?

These are your options:

205/40-16 (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresByVehicleAndSize.do?mk=&yr=1991&sw=false&cs=205&vid=006552&rd=16&ar=40)
205/45-16 (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresByVehicleAndSize.do?mk=&yr=1991&sw=false&cs=205&vid=006552&rd=16&ar=45)
215/40-16 (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresByVehicleAndSize.do?mk=&yr=1991&sw=false&cs=215&vid=006552&rd=16&ar=40)

Thank you. What is the difference with the 205 to the 215? I forget since it's been a while......:(

215 is WIDER than a 205 by 10mm

I remember now, and 40 is a lower profile than 45 correct???

None of this should throw the speedo out of wack either, right? Actually, yes it will, 215 will throw it off slightly, I just remembered...

the 215 40 will NOT throw it off because it is the same ride height as 205 45

...it is difficult to explain but the side profile is a math equasion based on the width.

if you go to the miata.net garage, they have a handy tire ride height calculator that shows you the difference in height of tires and how much your speedo is off!

right. I was thinking that if the original ride was 205/40 then 215 / 40 would throw it off. However, if you go from 205/45 to 215/40 then it should be fine.......I think its coming back. I remember I did a bunch or research on the topic a year ago when I was gonna get 18s for the Jetta.....:)

Width x Aspect Ratio = Section Height
Section Height x 2 = Combined Section Height
Combined Section Height + Wheel Diameter = Tire Diameter

Example: 185/60R14 85H or 185/60HR14

185mm x .60=111mm
111mm x 2=222mm
222mm + 355.6mm(14")= 577.6mm or 22.74"

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To convert to inches, divide by 25.4 In the example above, the width is 185mm or 7.28".

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the example above, the tire is 7.28" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one sidewall. In this case, 185x0.60=111mm or 7.28"x0.60=4.36".

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

To figure the outside diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2,(remember that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.

My stock rims are 205/50-15
The desired are 205/45-16; 205/40-16 ; 215/40-16 ; . I'd like to go with 215/40-16 for the lower profile....

stock is the baseline
the 205/45-16's have a difference of (+)0.8
the 205/40-16's have a difference of (-)2.7%
the 215/40-16's have a difference of (-)1.3%.

Here it all is broken down.....

stock sidewall is 4 inch.
the 205/45-16 is 3.6 inch
the 205/40-16's is 3.2 inch
the 215/40-16's is 3.4 inch

stock radius is 11.5 inch
the 205/45-16 is 11.6 inch
the 205/40-16 is 11.2 inch
the 215/40-16 is 11.4 inch

stock diameter is 23.1 inch
the 205/45-16 is 23.3 inch
the 205/40-16 is 22.5 inch
the 215/40-16 is 22.8 inch

stock circumference is 72.5 inch
the 205/45-16 is 73.1 inch
the 205/40-16 is 70.5 inch
the 215/40-16 is 71.5 inch

stock REVS/MILE is 874
the 205/45-16's 867
the 205/40-16's 898
the 215/40-16's 886

How noticable is all this in terms of the speedo, ride, etc.?
Would the 215/40-16 be ok? Any drawbacks?

will a (-) 1.3% difference throw things off??? Speedo? Rubbing issues?

IBID! I was told on the tex that the 215s are generally only used for 9 inch wide rims..........:( However, according to the chart I posted the 215s actaully help to make the difference from stock less. (-) 1.3% v. (-)2.7%. I'm not a smart man but I would think the 1.3 is better.....lol

From what I see, if I want to go with a lower profile (40) then I need to go with the 215 on width to offset the difference?

Anyone? I have to buy the tires today....

Rule of Thumb for tires

215/40 R16 for example

215 = the MM's across the tread patern (as in the foot print the tire leaves)

40 = the % of side wall as compared to the width of the tire (the 215 part)

16 = well thats just obvious

I thought they still made 225/35 R16? I may be wrong

I just bought a set of 215/40-16 in Hankook Ventus HRII trim:)

Problem, I just realized my 16 inch BBS rims have 205/55- 16 rubber

I'm going to 215/40-16. Will that even fit?

Does this mean they have to have a 7.5 inch wide rim?

I think the BBS RXII is only a 6.5 inch wide rim????

ibid

no.. they will fit o.k. just don't try to put 225s on there... you can put 215s on a 6.5" rim but I wouldn't put a 225 on a 6.5" rim

so what about this? it's not insinuating I need a 7.5 inch rim?
